What's new in alex.study

We ship improvements almost every day. Here is a running list of what has changed.

Improved

Calendar cards stay readable when space gets tight

When calendar columns get narrow, plan cards rearrange so you can still read each title.

With the sidebar and Alex both open, the plan calendar’s columns can get narrow, and card titles used to get cut off after a few letters.

Now, when a column gets tight, each card moves its icon to a small top row and lets the title use the full width of the card. Your plan stays easy to scan at any window size.

New

The AnKing MCAT deck now works with Anki sync

Link your AnKing deck and your reviews flow into the right topics and your study plan.

If you study with the AnKing MCAT deck, Alex can now read your reviews and match them to the right MCAT topics. Your card progress feeds into your study plan, so what you have already worked through in Anki is reflected in what Alex suggests next.

To get started:

  • Open the app menu and link your Anki account.
  • Install or update the Alex.Study Sync add-on in Anki.
  • Syncing runs on its own when you open Anki and after each review session.

After every sync, the add-on shows how many of your cards were matched to topics, so you can see your Anki progress is being counted.

Fixed

Your weekly day off sticks

When you tell Alex which day you want off each week during setup, that day now stays off across your whole plan.

When you set up your plan and tell Alex you want a day off each week, like Fridays, that day now stays off for every week of your plan.

If you give Alex a number of days off without saying which day you mean, he will ask which one works best, so you always get the weekly rest you asked for.

Improved

Speed and reliability improvements

Faster pages and steadier plan building and chat across the app.

We spent a couple of days under the hood. Pages load quicker, plan building is more dependable, and chat recovers on its own if a reply hits a hiccup. Marking items complete also stays smooth however fast you move through your list.

New

Watch your study videos in the app

Videos on your study plan now play right inside alex.study, remember where you left off, and show your progress.

The videos on your study plan now play right inside alex.study. Open one from your plan and it starts in a built-in player, so you can stay in the app while you watch.

What’s new:

  • Plays in the app. Video items on your plan open to a player built into alex.study.
  • Remembers your spot. Each video picks up where you left off, so stopping and coming back is easy.
  • Shows your progress. A small bar on the video card shows how much you have watched.
Improved

A calmer, quicker plan setup

Building your study plan with Alex now happens in one conversation, with quick taps for every answer.

Setting up your study plan with Alex feels like one conversation now. As Alex asks each question, a quick control appears right above the chat, so you can tap your answer or just tell him in your own words.

A few touches that make it faster and lighter:

  • Starting today or tomorrow is a single tap on the start date question.
  • The picker panels for dates, days off, subjects, and resources slide in gently, and each finishes with a simple Done.
  • A quiet progress row at the top shows what is set and what is left. Tap any item to jump back and change it.
  • If you already chose to mix subjects while reviewing your resources, Alex no longer asks about it again.

There is less on screen between you and the next step, so the whole setup reads cleaner from start to finish.

New

The MCAT textbook is now in the app

Read all three MCAT textbooks right inside alex.study — ask Alex about any concept, quiz yourself on a chapter, and your progress and bookmarks sync across devices.

The full MCAT textbook now lives inside alex.study. Open it from the sidebar and read Psych/Soc, Bio/Biochem, and Chem/Phys without leaving the app.

What’s new inside:

  • Ask Alex about any concept — open the chat on any topic and get a tutor’s explanation, the AAMC angle, or the trap to watch for.
  • Quiz me on a chapter — turn any chapter into a real practice quiz pulled from the question bank, then review it like any other quiz.
  • Synced progress and bookmarks — your read-checkmarks and saved concepts follow you across devices once you’re signed in.
  • A fresh look — the books now match the app’s ink-and-amber style.

The Bio/Biochem textbook is complete

Foundational Concept 3 — the nervous and endocrine systems and the main organ systems — is now live, completing the MCAT Bio/Biochem textbook across all three foundational concepts.

Foundational Concept 3 is here, completing the MCAT Bio/Biochem textbook — all three foundational concepts are now live.

Foundational Concept 3 — organ systems and homeostasis (25%):

  • Nervous & endocrine systems — neuron structure, the action potential, the synapse, and how hormones (peptide vs. steroid) are made, classified, and regulated
  • The main organ systems — circulatory, respiratory, immune, lymphatic, digestive, excretory, muscular, skeletal, reproductive, and the skin — each with its structure, mechanism, and role in homeostasis

That rounds out the whole section: the molecules and metabolism (FC1), cells and microbes (FC2), and the organ systems (FC3) — every concept taught at two depths, tagged by how AAMC tests it, with the classic trap pairs flagged, figures throughout, and a worked question in every chapter.

Improved

The Bio/Biochem textbook just got a lot deeper

A full coverage review added new Carbohydrates and Lipids chapters plus dozens of additions across the organ systems and metabolism — so you can study the whole section in one place.

We put the MCAT Bio/Biochem textbook through a full coverage review and filled the gaps, so the highest-yield facts AAMC tests are all in one place.

Two new chapters in Foundational Concept 1:

  • Carbohydrates — monosaccharides and their stereochemistry (anomers, epimers, the anomeric carbon), the disaccharides (sucrose, maltose, lactose) and glycosidic bonds, the polysaccharides (starch, glycogen, cellulose), and reducing-sugar tests — with a new figure.
  • Lipids — fatty acids and triglycerides (and saponification), the steroid/cholesterol ring system, and the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) — with a new figure.

Deeper organ systems (FC3): gut hormones (gastrin, secretin, CCK), cardiac output and Starling’s law, capillary fluid exchange, blood types and Rh, control of ventilation and lung volumes, the nephron’s countercurrent mechanism, RAAS and ANP, a fuller immune system (complement, NK cells, interferons, antibody structure, clonal selection, active vs. passive immunity), and reproduction (gametogenesis, fertilization, fetal circulation).

Deeper biochemistry (FC1): cell-surface signaling (GPCR and receptor tyrosine kinase cascades), metabolic regulation (fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, the Cori cycle, the carnitine shuttle), and lab techniques (ELISA, reducing vs. non-reducing SDS-PAGE).

Every addition keeps the same format as the rest of the book — a quick one-line version and the full detail, tagged by how AAMC tests it, with the classic trap pairs flagged.

New

The MCAT Bio/Biochem textbook is here

A new, free interactive textbook for MCAT Bio/Biochem. Foundational Concepts 1 and 2 are live — about 75% of the section — covering proteins & enzymes, molecular genetics, heredity, metabolism, cells & membranes, microbiology, and cell division, with search, study filters, figures, and worked questions.

We’re rolling out a new MCAT Bio/Biochem textbook — free, interactive, and built for studying, not just reading. Foundational Concepts 1 and 2 are live now (about 75% of the section).

Foundational Concept 1 — the molecular foundations of life (55%):

  • Amino acids & proteins — structure, the four levels of protein folding, enzymes, kinetics, and inhibition
  • Gene → protein — DNA structure, replication, transcription, translation, and gene regulation
  • Heredity & genetic diversity — Mendelian genetics, meiosis, linkage, and population genetics
  • Bioenergetics & metabolism — glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation

Foundational Concept 2 — cells, microbes, and how they divide (20%):

  • Cells & membranes — the fluid mosaic model, membrane transport, organelles, the cytoskeleton, and tissues
  • Prokaryotes & viruses — bacterial structure and genetics, viral life cycles, and retroviruses
  • Cell division & development — the cell cycle, mitosis, stem cells, and early embryology

Like the Psych/Soc textbook, every concept is taught at two depths — a quick one-line version and the full detail — tagged with how AAMC tests it, with the classic trap pairs called out and figures throughout. Search across the whole book, filter to the high-yield concepts or the trap pairs, switch any chapter to a short scannable view, and check yourself with a worked question in every chapter.

New

The MCAT Psych/Soc textbook

A new, free interactive textbook for Psych/Soc — every term and theory, how AAMC tests it, with search, study filters, and worked questions.

We added a new MCAT Psych/Soc textbook — a free, studyable reference for everything the section actually tests.

It follows the AAMC content outline exactly: five foundational concepts, twelve chapters, every term and theory taught at two depths — a quick one-line version and the full detail. Each concept is tagged with how AAMC tests it, the common trap pairs are called out, and there are figures throughout.

It’s built for studying, not just reading. Search across the whole book, filter to the high-yield concepts or the trap pairs, switch any chapter to a short scannable view, and check yourself with a worked question in every chapter plus a quick quiz.

New, lower pricing

Alex is now $29.99 a month, or $149 for 6 months. The free 7 day trial is unchanged.

We lowered the price of Alex. A monthly plan is now $29.99, and 6 months is $149, which works out to about $24.83 a month. Every plan still includes everything Alex does, with nothing locked behind a higher tier.

The free trial is the same as always. You can build your full study plan and use everything for 7 days, with no credit card to start.

Already subscribed? You keep your current rate.

Fixed

Daily flashcards show up from day one

Your daily flashcard practice now starts at the beginning of your plan, and Alex can see it when you ask.

If your plan includes daily flashcards, they now start from your first study day instead of appearing weeks in. Before, on busier days your content review could fill the whole day and quietly push your flashcard practice later, so it looked like you had none early on.

We also set your daily flashcard time to a more realistic length so it fits alongside the rest of your day.

And when you ask Alex about your flashcards, he now finds them wherever they are scheduled on your plan rather than telling you there are none.

New

Mix subjects in your content review

Study a few subjects together each day instead of one at a time. Choose it when you build your plan, or ask Alex to switch anytime.

Content review can now mix your subjects across each study day, so a single day might include some biology, some chemistry, and some psychology. Research on how people learn suggests that mixing subjects this way helps many students hold onto more than studying one subject all the way through before starting the next.

You still see your weakest topics first. Within that, your subjects rotate so each study day has some variety.

You can pick how you want it while building a plan. Already have a plan? Just ask Alex to mix up your content review, or to go back to one subject at a time. Your finished work and anything you moved by hand stay where they are.

Fixed

Progress tracking and plan edit fixes

Your day count stays accurate after plan changes, full-length dates are correct, and confirmed edits apply right away.

A few fixes for students who live in their study plan day to day.

Your progress now holds steady when your plan changes. Before, changing your exam date or rebalancing your schedule could reset your day count and make it look like you were starting over. Your real history, including the work you have already completed, now carries through.

Alex also reads your first full-length practice exam date straight from your plan, so the date he mentions matches what is actually on your calendar.

And when you tell Alex to go ahead with a change you both just talked through, he makes it right away instead of laying out the same plan a second time.

Improved

A fresh new look across alex.study

We refreshed the whole app and the website with a cleaner, calmer design and clearer typography.

We gave alex.study a fresh new look. The app and the website now share a cleaner, calmer design with clearer typography and more room to breathe, so every page is easier to read and move through.

Everything you already use works the same way. Your dashboard, study plan, quizzes, journal, and performance pages all picked up the new styling, and the homepage was rebuilt from the ground up.

Improved

Quiz suggestions that know what you have studied

Ask what to review and Alex now suggests quizzes on the topics you have already completed.

When you open the quiz library and ask what to review, Alex now starts from the topics you have already finished in your study plan and suggests a quiz there, leaning toward anything you marked as low comfort.

Before, it would point you to popular high-yield topics without checking your progress, so even a returning student could get told to start from the beginning. Now your completed content review shapes the suggestion, so the practice lines up with what you have actually covered.

Fixed

Smoother plan setup with Alex

Questions during plan setup, especially about dates, are no longer repeated.

When you build a study plan with Alex, questions, especially related to dates, were sometimes repeated. Now Alex remembers and moves on to the next step.

Fixed

Alex finds items anywhere on your plan

Name any task, even one scheduled months out, and Alex tracks it down to move or delete it.

Ask Alex about a specific item, like “can you delete Biochem chapter 12?”, and Alex now searches your entire plan to find it. Previously, items scheduled more than two weeks out could come back as “I don’t see that on your schedule” even though they were sitting right there next month.

This works whenever you name something on your plan: deleting an item you already covered, moving one to a different day, or just asking when it is scheduled.

Fixed

Days off and rescheduling fixes

Adding a day off keeps your existing off days, and rescheduled work always lands on upcoming dates.

Telling Alex you need certain days off, like “I can’t study Monday through Wednesday next week”, now adds those days to your existing off days. If you already had Sundays marked off, they stay off. You can also ask Alex to free a day back up (“I can study Sundays again”) or clear every off day, and the preview card tells you exactly which kind of change you are applying.

We also fixed where displaced work goes. When your plan reshuffles around new days off or another schedule change, every moved item now lands on an upcoming day. Previously, some items could end up on dates that had already passed.

New

The alex.study Companion Chrome extension is here

Get instant help on questions you have open in your browser and log journal entries in one click.

Our Chrome extension, alex.study Companion, is now live on the Chrome Web Store.

Install it and you can:

  • Get an explanation for any question you have open in your browser, including UWorld, AAMC, and other providers.
  • Log a journal entry in one click while you review. It auto-fills the screenshot, answer, and suggested tags.

After installing, link it to your account from the extension and you’re set. You can also find the install link any time in the app menu.

Improved

Reschedule your full-lengths in one ask

Tell Alex things like "put all my practice exams on Saturdays" and it happens in one step.

Want every full-length on the same day of the week? Just tell Alex. Say “move all my practice exams to Saturdays” and Alex finds each one, moves the whole set at once, and shows you the changes in a single card with undo.

This works for other groups of items too, like shifting this week’s practice into next week. Exams already sitting on the right day stay put, and if anything cannot move, Alex tells you which item and why.

New

Skip a whole section you already know

Tell Alex to leave a section like Psych/Soc out of your plan, and add it back anytime.

Already solid on a whole section? Now you can tell Alex to leave it out. If you are covering Psych/Soc on your own, just say so, and Alex removes that section’s content review from your plan and spreads the freed up time across everything else. The same works for Chem/Phys, Bio/Biochem, and CARS.

You can do this while building a new plan or anytime from the chat next to your calendar. Change your mind later and ask Alex to add the section back, and those resources return to your schedule.

Improved

Preview any plan change before it happens

Ask Alex to adjust your plan and see exactly what it does, before anything is saved.

Ask Alex to change your plan and you now see the result first. Move your exam date, shift your start, change your daily hours, or wrap up your content earlier. Alex shows exactly what it would do in a simple card, and nothing is saved until you hit Apply.

Alex also gives you a plain read on whether the change is a good idea, the way a tutor who looked at your schedule would. If a change would crowd out content or a practice exam, Alex says so. If nothing important is affected, Alex says that too.

You can also move your whole timeline at once, earlier or later, while keeping the same number of weeks.

Improved

More time to try alex.study

The free trial now runs for seven days.

Your free trial now lasts seven days, up from three. That gives you more time to build a plan, run a few study sessions, and see whether Alex fits how you study.
